Building Study Concepts: A Practical Guide

Build a Concept

Here’s one powerful, underrated “Study Hack Concept” you can build your entire learning system around in 2025–2026:

Name: The 3-Layer Knowledge Condensation Pyramid

(Slogan: "From ocean → lake → diamond")

Core Philosophy

Most students try to remember 1000 things at 10% depth.

Elite learners remember 30–50 things at 300–1000% depth → and everything else hangs on them like Christmas ornaments on a strong tree.

The Three Layers (build from bottom to top)

Layer 1 – The Diamond Core (3–12 items max per subject)

Extremely emotionally & visually charged "First Principles Anchors"

Examples:

  • Physics → F = ma is not the diamond. Real diamond: "Energy is the only currency that never lies"
  • Organic chemistry → "Nucleophiles love positive things + want to give electrons"
  • History → "Every empire dies from the same 3 diseases: debt, inequality, overextension"
  • Math → "Everything is just repeated group action + distance preservation"
  • → These 3–12 items must feel like cheat codes of the universe to you

Layer 2 – The Lake (30–70 big concepts/chunks)

Strong, connected stories that orbit the diamonds

(usually 1st or 2nd level explanations – the ones good YouTubers/teachers use)

Layer 3 – The Ocean (everything else – facts, exceptions, vocabulary, details, problem patterns)

→ Almost no direct memorization

→ They get passively absorbed by being constantly attached to Lake items

Practical Weekly Building Ritual (≈ 40–60 min version)

Sunday – Diamond & Lake day (once every 1–2 weeks)

  1. Blank paper + colored pens
  2. Write only the 3–8 Diamonds you currently have (big font)
  3. Around each diamond → draw 4–8 Lake concepts that "belong" to it
  4. Connect them with arrows + short why sentences
  5. Look at it 30 seconds and ask:
  6. "If I forget everything except these lines… Can I rebuild 80% of the subject?"

Every 2–3 days – Ocean feeding (15–25 min)

  • Do active recall / practice problems normally
  • Every time you meet an interesting fact/detail/technique:

            - Don't just highlight

            - Ask: "Which Lake concept is your daddy?"

            - Then say/write it out loud:
           -  "Ahhh… this is just the ugly cousin of [Lake concept X] when [condition Y] happens"

Visual Summary (how the pyramid should feel)

                💎💎💎     ← 3–12 Diamonds (emotional cheat codes)

               /  |  \   ← very strong emotional + visual links

         🌊🌊🌊🌊     🌊🌊🌊🌊     ← 30–70 Lake stories/chunks

      .   .   .   .   .   .   .   ← thousands of Ocean facts/details

(they stick because they have strong parents)

Quick Reality Check Questions (use them when you feel lost)

  1. Do I have fewer than 12 things I would tattoo on my body about this subject?
  2. If someone woke me up at 3am and asked the 5 sexiest ideas of the chapter — could I answer passionately?
  3. When I see a random problem/fact — does my brain immediately go "Ah, this is just [Lake concept] wearing a costume"?

When you answer "yes" to at least two → you're doing it right.

Pick one subject this week and try building your first real 3-Layer Pyramid.

The difference in long-term retention & feeling of control is usually shocking.
